Mobility Scooter and Wheelchair Battery FAQs
On average, power wheelchair batteries should last around two years, based on an average daily use of two to six hours. Check with your battery specifications for proper charging and maintenance tips.
To charge your power wheelchair battery, position your chair next to an electrical outlet. Turn off the controller power and set your wheelchair to drive mode. Plug your off-board charger into the corresponding controller socket and then into the electrical outlet. It generally takes between 8-14 hours for your wheelchair battery to fully charge. Charge your chair overnight so it's ready every day.
Although they look like car batteries, wheelchair batteries are quite different inside. A wheelchair battery is designed to handle long-term, deep discharge compared to a car battery. Do not use a car battery in your wheelchair for safety purposes.
Mobility scooters typically run on two 12V batteries connected in a series, equating to 24V of power, but they have one charger input.
If there is enough room for installation, you can upgrade your mobility scooter from one with a higher amp-hour rating. If your scooter uses two batteries, both must be 12V and have the same Ah rating. Otherwise, you’ll only get the amp-hour of the lower-rated battery. For example, if you install a 10 Ah and a 15 Ah, your scooter will only have access to 10 Ah, not the 15 Ah.
