How to Package Batteries for Recycling
Supplies needed
- A wood pallet
- A sturdy cardboard box
- A five-gallon paint bucket
- A steel or plastic drum
- Pallet wrap and banding
1. Select a sturdy pallet.
Prepare pallet with boxes or drums to begin battery collection.
2. Sort and collect batteries.
Organize your batteries according to chemistry until the container is full or you meet the minimum weight threshold.
3. Tape the appropriate chemistries.
Batteries that need tape over the terminals:
The following batteries don’t need tape:
- All lithium types with exposed terminals
- Any chemistry more than nine volts
- Sealed lead-acid (if packaged in bulk)
- Any battery you’re not sure of
The following batteries don’t need tape:
- Lithium-ion cellphone or laptop batteries
- Alkaline batteries less than nine volts
- Zinc batteries
- NiMH batteries
4. Label boxes or buckets clearly with the battery chemistry.
Mark the battery’s chemistry on outside of box or bucket using a marker or taping a printed label on the box.
5. Wrap or band the pallet.
Once you have 1 000 lbs. or more, securely wrap the containers to the pallet using banding and/or pallet wrap to prevent shifting during transit.
